As my time in Brazil comes to an end, I am trying to appreciate just how developed it is, and what an amazing year it has been, despite its many challenges. It is so easy to be romantic and rose tinted about places at the end…. however, some of the images of Sao Paulo and Brazil make it easy to see that in many ways it is sadly very similar to Africa in terms of development and equality. This year has been one of the toughest, and I am impressed by my resilience to stick it out, yet Brazil, in time has proven itself to be an awesome place, and I will miss it a lot. I am pleased I came. That is a sentence I don't think I could have written up to even a couple of months ago!
So, aside from friends (and drinking wine in cinemas!), how has Sao Paulo made me sad to say farewell…..
Food: Now generally this is a bit of a push factor as I am not a huge fan! Looking forward to a break from salt! But there are certain things that are delicious and sadly not available outside of Brazil. Acai is of course number one! The steaks and brigadeiros complete the list!
Travel: It has been so easy to get around and see the country and I am amazed by how much we have done in a year. South America is all so well connected and I am excited about exploring further in the coming weeks. It has been awesome to achieve and experience things I never thought I would. Rio Carnival and the Amazon were both mind blowing, but in very different ways.
People: Being able to blend in, and not being an obvious foreigner (until I speak!) is a great bonus. Friends of course, but as I keep realizing, sadly this is one of the costs of living around the world….friends then are all over the place, but there are plenty of gorgeous ones waiting for me in the UK, as well as lovely family.
Craziness: There is always something happening. The art scene, beaches, festivals, sights….it is a country rich in diversity and has just so much to see and do. There is also so much that simply doesn't make sense and although baffling, it is so funny and random, and charming in its own way!
